Scotland’s Low Emission Zones (LEZs) are changing the landscape for owners of older, more polluting vehicles. If your car does not meet the emission standards required for city centre driving, understanding your options is important. Our car scrapping service provides a practical solution.
What Are LEZs?
Low Emission Zones restrict access to designated areas for vehicles that do not meet minimum emission standards. In Scotland, LEZs have been introduced in Glasgow and Edinburgh, with other cities following. Non-compliant vehicles entering a LEZ face penalty charges that increase with repeat offences.
Which Vehicles Are Affected?
Generally, petrol cars must meet Euro 4 standards (roughly 2006 onwards) and diesel cars must meet Euro 6 standards (roughly 2015 onwards). This means many perfectly running diesel vehicles from 2010-2014 are non-compliant, despite having years of useful life remaining. Vans and commercial vehicles have different thresholds.
Your Options
If your car fails to meet LEZ standards, you can retrofit a compliant emission system (expensive and not always available), continue driving outside LEZ areas, sell the car privately to a rural buyer, or scrap it and use the proceeds toward a compliant replacement.
LEZ Scrapping Decisions
For cars that are already ageing and in need of repair, the LEZ restriction can be the deciding factor. If your non-compliant diesel has also developed mechanical issues, investing in both emission compliance and repairs rarely makes economic sense. Our auto salvage team can provide a guaranteed price that helps fund your next vehicle.
Non-Compliant but Valuable Parts
A car that fails LEZ standards may still have excellent mechanical components. Our car dismantlers recover engines, gearboxes, and other parts for vehicles used outside LEZ areas, meaning your non-compliant car can still command good parts value through our breakers yard.
