Choosing a legitimate car scrapping service protects you legally, financially, and environmentally. Unfortunately, unlicensed operators do exist, and using one can leave you liable for a vehicle that has not been properly destroyed. Here is how to verify a scrap car service is genuine.
Check ATF Licensing
Every legitimate scrap car service must operate from or with an Authorised Treatment Facility licensed by SEPA in Scotland or the Environment Agency in England. You can verify licences on the SEPA website. Our scrap yard is fully SEPA-licensed and happy to provide our licence details on request.
Scrap Metal Dealer Licence
Under the Scrap Metal Dealers Act 2013, all scrap metal dealers must hold a licence from their local authority. This licence should be displayed at their premises. You can check with the relevant council to verify a company holds a valid licence. We hold all required licences for our operations.
Red Flags to Watch For
Warning signs of an illegitimate operator include: no fixed business address, unwillingness to provide licence numbers, cash-only payments with no paperwork, no mention of Certificate of Destruction, significantly higher quotes than competitors (they may plan to reduce on arrival), and collecting vehicles in unmarked vans.
Certificate of Destruction
A legitimate ATF must issue a Certificate of Destruction for every vehicle processed. If a company cannot or will not provide this document, do not use them. Without it, you remain legally responsible for the vehicle. Our breakers yard issues Certificates for every vehicle through DVLA’s electronic system.
