One of the most common questions our car scrappers hear is whether you need insurance for a car you are about to scrap. The answer depends on where the vehicle is and whether you plan to drive it before collection.
Parked on Private Land
If your car is parked on private property such as your driveway and declared SORN with DVLA, you do not need insurance. The SORN declaration legally covers the gap. However, if the vehicle is on a public road, it must be insured regardless of its condition — even if it does not move.
Driving to a Scrap Yard
Never drive an uninsured vehicle to a scrap yard. If caught, you face a fixed penalty, points on your licence, and potential vehicle seizure. Our free collection service means there is no need to drive anywhere — we come to you from Glasgow, Edinburgh, Aberdeen, and everywhere in Scotland.
Cancelling Your Insurance
After your car is collected and you have your Certificate of Destruction, contact your insurer to cancel the policy. You may be entitled to a refund for the remaining policy period. Do not cancel before collection day — if something happens to the vehicle while it is still yours, you need cover.
Third-Party Insurance
If your car is road-legal and you want to keep driving it until collection day, minimum third-party insurance is required. Some insurers offer short-term policies that are cost-effective for temporary coverage. Our free quote system lets you choose your collection date, so you can time insurance cancellation precisely.
Our Insurance
Once our collection driver takes possession of your vehicle, it is covered by our trade insurance. You are no longer responsible from the moment the handover is complete and paperwork signed. Our auto salvage operations are fully insured for vehicle collection and processing.
