How Salt Causes Corrosion
Road salt creates an electrolyte solution that accelerates the electrochemical process of rusting. Salt spray reaches every exposed metal surface underneath your car — subframes, suspension components, brake pipes, chassis rails, and body panels. Once corrosion starts in salt-affected areas, it spreads rapidly.
Most Vulnerable Areas
Wheel arches, sills, subframes, and structural box sections are the most vulnerable areas. Water and salt collect in these enclosed spaces and cannot dry out easily. Scottish Highland roads with their proximity to the coast add salt air to the already challenging salt spread on roads. Vehicles in Inverness, Aberdeen, and coastal areas face double exposure.
MOT Implications
Structural corrosion is a serious MOT failure. If rust has perforated structural members or created holes near suspension mounting points, the vehicle fails and may not be economically repairable. Welding patches are temporary solutions at best — the surrounding metal is usually equally corroded. At this point, scrapping is the realistic option.

Even a heavily corroded car still contains hundreds of kilograms of recyclable steel, aluminium, and copper. The catalytic converter retains its precious metal value regardless of body corrosion.
