Modern cars contain multiple airbags — steering wheel, passenger dashboard, side curtain, knee, and seat-mounted units. Each contains a small explosive charge that must be safely managed during the scrapping process at our Authorised Treatment Facility.
Why Airbags Need Special Handling
Undeployed airbag inflators contain sodium azide or similar propellant compounds. These are classified as explosive materials. If an airbag deploys unexpectedly during dismantling, it can cause serious injury. Our car dismantlers follow strict safety protocols for every vehicle with intact airbags.
The Deactivation Process
Before any dismantling begins, our technicians disconnect the vehicle battery and wait for the capacitor in the airbag system to discharge, which typically takes 15-30 minutes. This prevents accidental electrical triggering. Each airbag unit is then either safely removed for recycling or deliberately deployed in a controlled manner.
Controlled Deployment
Some ATFs deploy airbags in a controlled setting using electrical triggering. This neutralises the explosive component, making the unit safe to handle. The deployed bag and metal housing can then be recycled normally. Our breakers yard has designated areas for safe airbag deployment.
Undeployed Airbag Value
Undeployed, undamaged airbag units from late-model vehicles have significant value as used replacement parts. A new steering wheel airbag from a dealer can cost hundreds of pounds, making quality used units popular with repair garages. Our auto breakers test and certify recovered airbag units before resale.
Seatbelt Pretensioners
