Why Flood Damage Is So Serious
Water is the enemy of modern vehicles. When floodwater enters a car, it damages electrical systems and wiring, corrodes mechanical components and connections, contaminates engine oil and transmission fluid, ruins upholstery, carpet, and sound deadening, causes mould and persistent dampness, and can hydro-lock the engine if water enters the combustion chambers.
Can a Flood-Damaged Car Be Repaired?
If the water only reached the floor level, drying out and replacing floor carpets might save the car. But if water reached the dashboard or engine bay, the repair cost usually exceeds the car’s value many times over. Modern cars contain dozens of electronic control units that are destroyed by water ingress, and replacing them is extremely expensive.
Insurance Write-Off
Most insurers will write off a flood-damaged car as the repair costs are prohibitive. If you have comprehensive insurance, you should receive a payout based on the car’s pre-flood market value. The insurer then owns the salvage and will dispose of the vehicle.
