If your car has outstanding parking tickets, speeding fines, or other penalties, you might be wondering whether this prevents you from scrapping it. Here is what you need to know about clearing up outstanding issues before disposal.
Fines Do Not Prevent Scrapping
Outstanding fines are attached to the registered keeper, not the vehicle itself. You can still scrap a car with unpaid fines, but scrapping the car does not make the fines disappear. You remain liable for any penalties incurred while you were the registered keeper, regardless of what happens to the vehicle.
Parking Fines
Both council-issued Penalty Charge Notices and private parking fines follow the registered keeper. Scrapping the car and being removed from the DVLA register does not cancel these debts. Pay or appeal any outstanding parking fines separately from the scrapping process.
Speeding and Traffic Offences
Camera-detected speeding fines and other traffic offences are issued to the registered keeper. These must be dealt with regardless of whether you still own the vehicle. Ignoring them leads to escalating penalties and potential court action.
Congestion and Clean Air Zone Charges
Unpaid congestion charges or Clean Air Zone penalties continue to accrue interest and enforcement fees. Scrapping the car stops future charges but does not clear existing debts.
Road Tax Arrears
If you have been driving without road tax, the DVLA can issue back-dated penalties. These remain your responsibility even after scrapping. When we process your car at our scrap yard, the DVLA is notified, which stops future tax liability but does not clear arrears.
