A Statutory Off Road Notification (SORN) tells DVLA that your vehicle is off the public road and not being driven. Many cars that come to our scrap yard have been on SORN for months or even years. Here is how SORN interacts with the scrapping process.
What Is SORN?
SORN is a legal declaration that your vehicle is being kept off the public road. While a vehicle is on SORN, you do not need to pay road tax or have it insured, but it must be stored on private land — not on the street. SORN is free to apply for and lasts until the vehicle is taxed, sold, scrapped, or exported.
Can You Scrap a SORN Vehicle?
Absolutely. A SORN vehicle can be scrapped at any time. In fact, SORN vehicles are among the most commonly scrapped because they have often been sitting unused while the owner decides what to do. Our car scrappers collect SORN vehicles daily from driveways, garages, and private land across Scotland.
Collection of SORN Vehicles
Since a SORN vehicle cannot legally be driven on public roads, it must be collected on a flatbed truck. Our collection service always uses appropriate transport, and for SORN vehicles that may have flat tyres, dead batteries, or be in confined spaces, our drivers bring the equipment needed to load them safely. Collection is free from all areas of Scotland.
SORN Vehicle Condition
Vehicles that have been sitting on SORN for extended periods often develop additional issues — flat batteries, seized brakes, perished tyres, and rodent damage are common. These do not affect our ability to collect and scrap your car. We buy broken cars in any condition.
When SORN Ends
Your SORN automatically ends when we process the vehicle and notify DVLA of its destruction. You do not need to take any action regarding the SORN — we handle everything. You will receive a Certificate of Destruction as confirmation.
