The Role of DVLA in Car Scrapping

The Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) plays a central role in the car scrapping process. Every vehicle scrapped in the UK must be properly notified to DVLA to release the registered keeper from legal responsibility. Here is how our car scrapping service manages this process.

Why DVLA Notification Matters

Until DVLA is notified that your vehicle has been scrapped, you remain the registered keeper. This means you could still be liable for road tax, parking fines, congestion charges, and even crimes committed using the vehicle. Our scrap yard handles DVLA notification immediately to protect you.

The V5C Process

When you scrap your car, Section 9 of the V5C registration certificate is completed by our auto salvage team. This section records the transfer of the vehicle to an Authorised Treatment Facility. The completed V5C is sent to DVLA, who update their records to show the vehicle has been permanently destroyed.

Certificate of Destruction

Once your vehicle has been processed, our breakers yard issues a Certificate of Destruction through DVLA’s electronic system. This is the definitive document confirming your vehicle no longer exists. Keep it safe — it is your permanent proof of legal disposal.

Road Tax Refund

When DVLA processes the notification of destruction, any remaining full months of road tax are automatically refunded to the payment method used. You do not need to apply separately for this refund — it happens as part of the standard process.

Checking DVLA Records

After scrapping, you can verify your vehicle has been properly removed from the DVLA register using the free vehicle enquiry service at gov.uk. This gives peace of mind that the notification has been processed correctly.
