When you scrap a vehicle in the UK, one of the most important documents you will receive is the Certificate of Destruction, commonly known as a CoD. This document provides legal proof that your vehicle has been permanently destroyed at a licensed facility.
What Exactly Is a CoD?
A Certificate of Destruction is an official document issued by an Authorised Treatment Facility when a vehicle is scrapped. It contains the vehicle registration number, VIN, date of destruction, and the ATF details. The DVLA is notified electronically, and your records are updated to show the vehicle no longer exists.
Why Is It So Important?
Without a CoD, you remain the registered keeper of the vehicle in the eyes of the DVLA. This means you could be held responsible for road tax, insurance requirements, parking fines, speeding tickets, or even criminal activity involving the vehicle. There have been cases where people who sold cars for scrap to unlicensed operators continued receiving penalty notices years later.
Who Can Issue a CoD?
Only a licensed Authorised Treatment Facility can issue a genuine Certificate of Destruction. This is one of the most important reasons to use a licensed scrap yard rather than an unlicensed operator. If someone offers to scrap your car but cannot provide a CoD, walk away.
What About SORN Vehicles?
Even if your car is on a Statutory Off Road Notification (SORN), you still need a CoD when it is scrapped. A SORN only tells the DVLA the car is not being used on public roads. Without a CoD, the vehicle technically still exists in their system.
How We Handle It
When we collect your vehicle, we process the Certificate of Destruction and notify the DVLA electronically. You do not need to do anything. The confirmation comes directly from the DVLA, usually within two to four weeks. This is all part of our scrap my car service.
