Depollution is the critical first step in responsible vehicle recycling, yet most car owners have never heard the term. Before any dismantling or crushing takes place at our Authorised Treatment Facility, every vehicle undergoes thorough depollution to remove all hazardous substances.
What Is Depollution?
Depollution is the systematic removal of all environmentally hazardous materials from a vehicle. This must happen before any mechanical dismantling or crushing can begin. It is a legal requirement for all Authorised Treatment Facilities and is monitored by SEPA in Scotland.
Fluids Removed
Our trained depollution technicians drain engine oil, gearbox oil, differential oil, brake fluid, power steering fluid, engine coolant, washer fluid, and fuel. Each fluid goes into a separate collection system. These fluids are then either recycled or safely disposed of through licensed waste contractors. A typical car yields 15-25 litres of mixed fluids.
Air Conditioning
Air conditioning refrigerant is a potent greenhouse gas. Our recovery equipment captures every gram of refrigerant from the vehicle’s climate system. This captured gas is either recycled for reuse or destroyed using approved methods. Venting refrigerant to the atmosphere is illegal and environmentally damaging.
Battery and Pyrotechnics
Vehicle batteries contain lead and acid, both hazardous materials. Batteries are removed and sent to specialist lead recyclers. Airbag and seatbelt pretensioner explosive charges are safely deactivated by our car dismantlers before any further work begins.
Why It Matters
Without proper depollution, crushing a vehicle would release these hazardous materials into the environment. Oil and coolant contaminate soil and groundwater. Battery acid is corrosive and toxic. Refrigerants damage the ozone layer. Choosing a licensed car scrapping service ensures none of these pollutants enter the environment.
