Do I Need a V5C to Scrap My Car

buyer@webuyscrapcarsandvans.co.uk 2 min read

One of the most common questions we hear is whether you need the V5C registration document to scrap your car. The short answer is no, you can still scrap your vehicle without it, but having the V5C makes things smoother.

What Is the V5C?

The V5C is the vehicle registration certificate issued by the DVLA. It records the registered keeper and contains important details including the registration number, VIN, make, model, and engine size. It is not proof of ownership but a record of who is responsible for the vehicle.

Scrapping With a V5C

If you have your V5C, the process is simple. When we collect your vehicle, we complete the relevant section to notify the DVLA. We then issue a Certificate of Destruction, and the DVLA is automatically notified. You should receive confirmation within a few weeks.

Scrapping Without a V5C

Lost your logbook? We can still collect and scrap your vehicle. You will need alternative proof of identity and address, such as a driving licence and utility bill. We verify vehicle details through the DVLA system and write to them directly to notify of the scrapping.

Why the V5C Matters

Without proper DVLA notification, you remain the registered keeper. This means you could still receive fines, tax demands, or be held liable if the vehicle is found abandoned. Working with a licensed scrap yard like ours is important because we handle all paperwork regardless.

Other Helpful Documents

Having your MOT certificate, insurance documents, or purchase receipts can help verify ownership. If your car has broken down or been in an accident, any related documentation is also useful.
