Eco-Friendly Car Disposal: What It Really Means

buyer@webuyscrapcarsandvans.co.uk 2 min read

The phrase “eco-friendly car disposal” is used a lot in the scrap car industry, but what does it actually mean in practice? As a licensed Authorised Treatment Facility, we can explain exactly what happens when your car is recycled responsibly at our breakers yard.

Depollution: The Critical First Step

Before any dismantling or recycling begins, every vehicle must be depolluted. This involves draining all fluids including engine oil, gearbox oil, brake fluid, power steering fluid, coolant, and fuel. Air conditioning refrigerant is captured rather than released. Battery acid is neutralised. All these substances would contaminate soil and water if not properly handled.

Hazardous Materials Removal

Modern cars contain numerous hazardous materials beyond fluids. Airbag explosive charges are safely deactivated. Mercury switches in older vehicles are removed. Brake pads containing asbestos in vintage cars are handled with appropriate safety measures. Our car dismantlers are trained to identify and manage every hazardous component.

Parts Recovery

Before the shell goes for metal recycling, our auto breakers team removes reusable components. Engines, gearboxes, doors, bumpers, headlights, and electronic modules are tested, catalogued, and sold through our used car parts service. This extends the useful life of components and reduces the need for new manufacturing.

Metal Recycling

The remaining shell is processed through an industrial shredder. Ferrous metals, aluminium, copper, and other metals are separated using magnetic and eddy current systems. These metals re-enter the manufacturing supply chain. Over 95% of a modern car’s weight is recycled.

Why It Matters

Choosing a licensed scrap yard over an unlicensed operator is not just a legal requirement — it genuinely protects Scotland’s environment. Unlicensed operators often dump fluids and abandon shells, causing lasting environmental damage.
