Scotland has specific regulations governing how vehicles are scrapped, and understanding these rules protects you as a consumer. Using a compliant scrap yard ensures your vehicle is processed legally and that you are released from all responsibility.
SEPA Regulation
In Scotland, the Scottish Environment Protection Agency (SEPA) regulates Authorised Treatment Facilities rather than the Environment Agency which operates in England and Wales. SEPA ensures that every licensed breakers yard in Scotland meets strict environmental standards for depollution, waste management, and pollution prevention.
Authorised Treatment Facility Licensing
Only licensed ATFs can legally destroy vehicles and issue Certificates of Destruction. Operating without a licence is a criminal offence. When you scrap your car with us, you are using a fully SEPA-licensed facility that meets every regulatory requirement. Unlicensed operators put you at legal risk.
Scrap Metal Dealers Act 2013
This act requires all scrap metal dealers to be licensed by their local authority. It mandates identity verification for sellers, cashless payment for certain transactions, and record-keeping requirements. Our car scrappers are fully compliant with all provisions of this act.
End-of-Life Vehicles Directive
This EU-derived legislation sets minimum recycling and recovery targets for end-of-life vehicles. Currently, 95% of a vehicle’s weight must be recovered and 85% must be recycled. Our auto salvage and dismantling processes consistently achieve these targets through thorough parts recovery and materials separation.
Your Rights as a Consumer
You have the right to receive a Certificate of Destruction, to have DVLA notified of the vehicle’s destruction, and to receive the quoted price for your vehicle. If any scrap yard fails to provide these, they may be operating illegally. Contact us if you have concerns about a previous scrapping experience.
