Scrapping a car involves more than just handing over the keys. There is important paperwork to complete to ensure you are no longer legally responsible for the vehicle. Here is everything you need to know about the documentation required when using our car scrapping service.
The V5C Logbook
The V5C registration certificate, commonly called the logbook, is the main document needed. When you scrap your car, the V5C is used to notify DVLA that the vehicle has been scrapped. You should have the V5C ready when our collection driver arrives. If you have lost your V5C, you can still scrap your car — we just need to follow an alternative notification process.
DVLA Notification
When you scrap a car through our licensed scrap yard, we handle the DVLA notification on your behalf. We complete Section 9 of the V5C to confirm the vehicle has been transferred to an Authorised Treatment Facility. This releases you from all legal responsibility for the vehicle.
Certificate of Destruction
Every vehicle scrapped at an ATF must receive a Certificate of Destruction. This is an official document that confirms the vehicle has been permanently taken off the road. Keep your Certificate of Destruction safe — it is your proof that the vehicle was disposed of legally through a licensed breakers yard.
MOT and Insurance
You do not need a valid MOT or insurance to scrap a car. If your vehicle has been declared SORN, that is fine. Our auto salvage team will collect it regardless of its status. However, remember to cancel your insurance after scrapping to stop paying premiums on a vehicle that no longer exists.
Road Tax Refund
If you have paid road tax, DVLA will automatically refund any remaining full months once the DVLA notification is processed. This happens without you needing to do anything additional.
