Vehicle glass — windscreens, side windows, and rear screens — presents a unique recycling challenge because automotive glass is different from bottle glass. Our scrap yard ensures all vehicle glass is properly recycled rather than sent to landfill.
Types of Vehicle Glass
Windscreens are made from laminated glass — two layers of glass bonded with a PVB (polyvinyl butyral) interlayer for safety. Side and rear windows are typically tempered glass that shatters into small, relatively safe pieces on impact. Each type requires different recycling approaches at our breakers yard.
Windscreen Recycling
Laminated windscreens are the most challenging vehicle glass to recycle because the PVB interlayer must be separated from the glass. Specialist processors use mechanical methods or autoclaving to separate the layers. The recovered glass cullet is used in fibreglass production, construction aggregates, and sometimes new glass manufacturing.
Tempered Glass Recycling
Tempered side windows are easier to recycle. The glass is crushed into cullet and can be used in new glass production, road surfacing, water filtration media, and construction materials. Our car dismantlers remove intact glass panels before crushing the vehicle shell to ensure clean glass separation.
Resale Value
Undamaged vehicle glass, particularly windscreens for popular models, has significant resale value through our used car parts service. A new windscreen can cost hundreds of pounds, so quality used replacements are always in demand. Our auto breakers carefully remove and store glass for resale.
Recycling Rates
The UK recycling rate for automotive glass is improving but still has room for growth. By working with specialist glass recyclers, our auto salvage operation ensures that every piece of vehicle glass is either reused or recycled rather than being buried in landfill.
